What is the future of Roe v. Wade?
According to the New York Times, the battle for access to women’s health care has moved from the Supreme Court to individual states where rights are already severely eroded:
“Women in many parts of the country are already finding it nearly impossible to exercise their reproductive rights. At least 424 anti-abortion bills have been passed at the state level since 2010, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health. As a result, 43 percent of all reproductive-age women — 29 million people — now live in areas that are hostile to abortion rights, including seven states that each have just one abortion clinic left.”
This means that state legislators must do what they can to secure abortion rights, even if Roe v. Wade is overturned.
These unnecessary restrictions work against poor women and women of color for whom reproductive freedom directly affects their educational attainment, economic survival and maternal health. According to Essence, “At the end of the day, abortion restrictions are rooted in the fact that our society does not trust women to make their own decisions about their bodies, especially Black women. “
Dr. Leana Wen, president of Planned Parenthood, said in today’s Rolling Stone, “As a doctor, I’ve seen women’s health care siloed, stigmatized and attacked like no other aspect of health care. I’ve seen the cost of abortion restrictions firsthand. The cost is women’s lives.”
I was so moved by her pledge: “I pledge to fight with everything I have, working with our partners in elected office and beyond, to build a world where no one questions that abortion care is health care, reproductive health care is health care and health care is a fundamental human right.”
